Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey supported England’s decision to take a short trip to Noosa for a beach holiday ahead of the third Ashes Test, despite being 0–2 down in the five-match series.

With a ten-day gap between the second and third Tests, the England contingent opted to take some time off and head to the beach — a move that has been mocked by the Australian media.

While England have been criticised for relaxing with another series defeat down under seemingly on the horizon, Carey backed the tourists’ decision to shift the focus away from cricket during the long gap between Tests.

“It’s a pretty big series, with lots of time between games. For the Australian cricket team, we get to go home for a few days and be with our families, so touring parties have to find time to fill in those little windows,” Carey told reporters. “I’m not sure you need to do it, [but] it’s totally up to touring groups to find ways to take your mind off cricket for a little bit. The Ashes is very hotly contested. You don’t want to be thinking about cricket every single day of the tour. If you do have a little break, it’s probably not a bad time to refresh the batteries.”

Carey supported his point by giving the example of his team’s last Ashes tour of England in 2023, when they took a break between Tests to travel to Edinburgh.

Ben Stokes and company also took a short break and travelled to Abu Dhabi during the 2024 tour of India before heading to Rajkot.

The third Test in Adelaide is a must-win for England if they are to keep the series alive and break their long streak of defeats down under.
