Jacob Bethell (PC: X/England Cricket)

Jacob Bethell played a memorable innings on Day 4 of the fifth and final Ashes Test at Sydney on January 7. In the second innings, Bethell scored a composed century and remained unbeaten at stumps, helping England take a lead of 119 runs at the end of Day 4 of the Ashes.

Bethell’s knock helped England stabilise their innings after the early wicket of Zak Crawley. Coming in at number three, he stayed calm and scored his first Test hundred, which was also his maiden first-class century. He remained unbeaten on 142 runs, smashing 15 boundaries.

In the ongoing Ashes 2025/26, Bethell has scored a total of 193 runs in four innings at an average of 64.33 so far.

With this knock, Bethell became the first batter in 33 years to score his maiden first-class century during an Ashes series. The last player to achieve this rare feat was Australia’s Ian Healy in 1993. From England, only Jack Russell had previously managed to score his first red-ball hundred during an Ashes Test, back in 1989.

During England’s second innings, Bethell and Ben Duckett (42) added a crucial partnership of 81 runs. However, Joe Root (6), Will Jacks (0), captain Ben Stokes (1), and Brydon Carse (16) failed to make an impact. Harry Brook (42) and Jamie Smith (26) also chipped in with useful contributions.

For Australia, Beau Webster was the standout bowler as he picked up three crucial wickets while conceding just 51 runs in 13 overs. Scott Boland also claimed two important wickets and bowled economically at an impressive economy rate of 1.78.

At the end of Day 4’s play, England were 302/8 in their second innings, with Bethell still at the crease alongside Matthew Potts, holding a lead of 119 runs.
