Former Australian opener David Warner has predicted that Usman Khawaja will open the batting, with Travis Head slotting back into the middle order for the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, starting on December 14.
Australia have named their squad for the Adelaide Test. Khawaja, who did not play the second Test, has retained his place in the squad despite concerns over his form and fitness. The veteran left-handed batter played the first Test but did not open due to back spasms. Head, opening in Khawaja’s place, smashed a hundred in Perth. In Brisbane, the selectors stuck with the opening pair of Head and Jake Weatherald. Now, with the third Test just three days away, questions have been raised over who will open, given that Khawaja has regained his fitness.
“I think Uzzy (Usman Khawaja) comes back in, moves to the top, and Trav (Travis Head) goes down. That’s probably a worse result for England, with Travis Head going back down the order,” Warner told reporters, as quoted by the ICC.
Warner applauded Head’s adaptability and versatility.
“At the end of the day, Travis put his hand up to bat in the situation he was in. He came out and batted in the way Travis Head does. You see plenty of interviews with Trav saying that is Uzzy’s spot, and if, when the time comes, they ask him to go up the order, he wouldn’t mind doing that,” he added.
Pat Cummins is all set to make his much-awaited comeback in the upcoming Test. The question for Australia is who will open alongside Jake Weatherald. If Khawaja does, then Josh Inglis will have to make way.
