Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey hit a brilliant century against England in the third Test of the 2025/26 Ashes series to take Australia beyond 300 at the end of day one at the Adelaide Oval.

After reaching the three-figure mark, the left-handed batter took off his helmet and looked up at the sky, honouring the memory of his late father. His father, Gordon, passed away on 25 September after a long battle with cancer, which was diagnosed in 2021, making the century especially significant.

Speaking to Fox Cricket at the end of the opening day’s play, Carey said, “Dad probably played the biggest role in my cricket. He coached me all the way through, as dads want to do, and sort of let me go once I got into my older teenage years. But he would always shoot me a message … it was great. I won’t go into too much depth, but it was a special moment for me and for the family too.”

Carey’s wife, Eloise, was present at the ground with their children and was visibly emotional after her husband reached the milestone at his home venue.

“To make 100 here in front of home fans and family was special. And I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I’ll try not to tear up, but it was great. And with my mum, brother, sister, Eloise and the kids here, it was a great moment,” he added.

Carey stitched together an important fifth-wicket partnership of 91 runs with Usman Khawaja, who scored 82 while batting at number four. The South Australian also built two half-century partnerships with Josh Inglis and Mitchell Starc. It was a sensible innings from Carey, punishing every bad ball that came his way while respecting the good ones. He was dismissed for 106 off 143 balls, which included eight fours and a six.

Australia will resume on day two at 326 for eight, with Mitchell Starc unbeaten on 33 and Nathan Lyon at the other end.
