India’s batting star Virat Kohli has taken a big step toward the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings after two brilliant performances in the ongoing series against South Africa.
He smashed a fantastic century in the first ODI at Ranchi, and once again on December 3, he scored his 53rd ODI hundred and 84th international century in Raipur. Unfortunately, that effort went in vain as South Africa pulled off a historic chase, but one more match is still left in the series. Hence, expectations are high that Kohli could rise further in the rankings.
In the first match, he scored 135 runs from 120 balls, which lifted him to fourth place among ODI batters. After that knock, his points tally rose to 751, leaving him just 32 points behind his teammate Rohit Sharma, who holds the No. 1 spot with 783 points. Kohli has not reached the top since 2021.
Now, with one more century added to his bag, it is expected that when the rankings are updated next time, Kohli might move closer to the top spot, perhaps even leapfrogging Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran (3rd spot, 764 points) and New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell (2nd spot, 766 points).
However, Kohli will be in action again on December 6 at Visakhapatnam when India play the series decider against South Africa.
