Former India batter Robin Uthappa said that young sensation Abhishek Sharma reminds him of former Sri Lankan hard-hitting all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya.
Speaking on JioStar, Uthappa said that Abhishek’s hitting abilities instil fear among opposition bowlers.
“He’s already hit over 300 sixes in T20 cricket, which tells you what a powerful and dynamic batter he is. In fact, he reminds me of Sanath Jayasuriya—sheer dominance as an opening batter. It instils intimidation and fear in bowlers, something you only see when players are in scorching form. Despite being a youngster, he’s had a prolific year. Teams are planning for him, trying to bowl in areas where he doesn’t score, but he seems to have solutions. That proactive thinking is quite amazing.”
In 2025, the dashing left-hander has played 20 T20I matches so far, scoring 825 runs at an average of 43.42 and a strike rate of 195.03. His tally includes five fifties and a century.
Before the ongoing five-match home T20I series, he scored a hundred off 32 balls while playing for Punjab against Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Uthappa also said that Abhishek’s dominance in domestic cricket shows the kind of dream run he is going through.
“Even before the series, he was playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and was just gunning teams down. So you knew he was in good form,” he added.
