India skipper Shubman Gill shared an update on Washington Sundar after the team’s victory in the first ODI in Vadodara on Sunday, January 11.
Picked ahead of Nitish Kumar Reddy, Sundar felt discomfort in his body after bowling five overs, in which he conceded 27 runs without taking a wicket. The off-spin bowling all-rounder walked off midway through New Zealand’s innings and did not return to the field on Sunday. During his first spell, Sundar was also seen clutching his hamstring in one of the overs. Nitish fielded for Sundar for the remainder of the innings as a substitute fielder.
Despite the discomfort, Sundar later came out to bat at No. 8 as India registered a four-wicket win. Harshit Rana was sent ahead of him as the Indian team tried not to expose the 26-year-old, who is also part of the T20 World Cup squad. During his brief stay at the crease, Sundar looked visibly uncomfortable and in pain while running between the wickets. There were instances when a second run was on offer, but Sundar struggled to complete even a single. KL Rahul took responsibility and finished the game with a six in grand style. Sundar remained unbeaten.
When asked about Sundar’s injury status during the post-match presentation, Gill said:
“Washington Sundar has a side strain and will go for a scan after the match.”
It is pertinent to note that Sundar is the third Indian player to pick up an injury. Earlier, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the ongoing series after suffering a side strain while practising in the nets. Tilak Varma is unavailable for the first three T20Is against New Zealand due to a groin injury.
The Indian team will be sweating on the fitness of Tilak and Sundar, with the World Cup less than a month away.
