Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes that it will be difficult for the Indian team management to ignore Ishan Kishan when selecting the playing XI for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, “But the way Ishan Kishan is batting, how will you ignore him? Of course, it is about keeping things stable, but how can you ignore him? Whatever happened, Shubman is a precedent for this. Why was Shubman in that spot? Because after seeing the partnership between Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, that partnership looked threatening. But the way Ishan Kishan is batting, how can you just ignore it? It is very tough. So I think they have a clear task cut out. If they want to remain stable with Sanju and not make too many changes, that is understandable. But if they say they want to try changes, if they want to try Ishan Kishan at the top, it is also a warranted merit.”

Kishan was brought back into the India T20I setup after two years following his thrilling performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025/26, where he was the leading run-getter of the tournament. He scored 517 runs in 10 matches at an average of 57.44 and a strike rate of 197.32. His tally included two centuries and two fifties, with a best score of an unbeaten 113.

The left-hander could not impress in the first T20I of the five-match series against New Zealand. However, in the second match, he built a match-winning partnership with captain Suryakumar Yadav while scoring 76 off 32 balls. In the third match, he could not capitalise on the start and was dismissed after scoring 28 off 13 balls. On the other hand, Sanju Samson is yet to play a big knock in the series and has struggled badly so far.
