India’s star T20I batter Abhishek Sharma lit up Guwahati with a stunning knock against New Zealand on January 25. After his explosive innings, his mentor and former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh shared a cheeky comment on social media, reminding everyone about his long-standing T20I record.
Abhishek smashed 68 runs off 28 balls, which included a half-century in just 14 balls. Yuvraj reminded everyone that his 12-ball fifty record is still safe. Reacting to Abhishek’s knock, Yuvraj wrote on social media, “Still can’t get a 50 off 12 balls, can you? Well played – keep going strong!”
Yuvraj holds the record for the fastest T20I fifty by an Indian and by a player from an ICC full-member nation. He achieved the feat during the 2007 T20 World Cup, where he also famously smashed six sixes in an over off Stuart Broad.
Abhishek’s performance was equally breathtaking as he reached his fifty in 14 balls, making him the second-fastest Indian to score a T20I half-century. With this knock, he also set a new record for the most T20I half-centuries scored in 25 balls or fewer. India captain Suryakumar Yadav matched this record in the same match. Their aggressive batting helped India chase down 154 runs in just 10 overs, which is also the fastest successful chase of a 150-plus target by a full-member nation.
After the match, Abhishek admitted the challenge was tough and said, “That’s more than impossible for anyone (to break Yuvraj’s record), but still, you never know. Any batsman could do it because I think all the batters have been batting really well in this series as well and going forward, it’s going to be fun.”
