Former India coach Ravi Shastri praised India’s star batter Virat Kohli and suggested India captain Shubman Gill to follow the veteran’s work ethic and dedication to achieve greater success in his career.
Shastri made the comments during commentary in the first ODI of the three-match series between India and New Zealand in Vadodara, as quoted by NDTV Sports.
Highlighting Kohli’s discipline and hunger, Shastri said: “The single-mindedness, the hunger. The willingness to push that body to the limits. And I have seen that in my time when I was with the team, his work ethics probably second to none. I have seen just the way he goes about his job, the number of catches he takes in the morning, the catches in the outfield, and the throws into the keeper’s gloves. Apart from his batting and everything else, it’s a routine.”
Kohli walked out to bat alongside Gill after India lost Rohit Sharma early in the chase of 301. The duo put together a crucial 118-run partnership off 107 balls, which not only stabilised the innings but also laid a strong foundation for India’s successful chase.
Gill scored a composed 56 off 71 balls, including three fours and two sixes, while Kohli played a match-winning knock of 93 off 91 balls. His innings included eight fours and a six, striking at 102.20. The 37-year-old was later adjudged the Player of the Match for his decisive contribution.
The partnership showcased Kohli’s ability to guide young batters under pressure, something Shastri subtly pointed towards while advising Gill to learn from Kohli’s professionalism and commitment. Kohli’s consistency and preparation continue to set a benchmark for the current generation of Indian cricketers.
India eventually completed the chase with confidence, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. The second ODI between the two teams will be played on January 14 in Rajkot.
