In a major setback for the Pakistan Under-19 team, wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Shayan has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a nose injury. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will name a replacement in due course.
During Pakistan’s training session on Friday, ahead of their must-win game against India, Shayan was hit on the nose while keeping wicket.
As soon as he was struck and fell to the ground, the medical team rushed onto the field and escorted him off. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital, where scans revealed a fracture to his nose.
“Pakistan U19 wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Shayan has been ruled out of the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup after being struck on the nose by a ball while wicketkeeping to a fast bowler during a scenario-based practice match,” the PCB said in a statement.
“He was taken to hospital, where X-rays confirmed a fracture. A replacement for Mohammad Shayan will be named in due course,” it added.
Hamza Zahoor, the other designated wicketkeeper in the squad, is most likely to don the gloves. The right-handed batter opened the innings for Pakistan in the previous game against New Zealand.
Two days before the match against India, Pakistan played an intra-squad match in which they lost Shayan to injury. If Pakistan fail to win against India, it will bring an end to their World Cup campaign.
