In every sporting journey, the spotlight of a victory usually falls on the athletes; their every move is covered, every story is out there for the viewers to consume. Yet, behind every performance, lies a network of people whose contributions rarely come in front of mainstream cameras. They rarely find space on television screens or match reports, yet they are an inevitable part of the team who ensure the smooth flow of the major events as well as the sustenance of success, long after the initial applause fades.
One such story focuses on the major contribution of gold medallist Sumit Antil’s coach, Arun. He repeatedly acknowledged the massive role that his coach had played in his journey and without any hesitation, took off his gold medal and placed it around Arun’s neck during a media interaction. This incredibly heartwarming moment was witnessed by my colleague, Rohan Chowdhury during the Paris Paralympics 2024. “Though he’s happy with the gold, he isn’t satisfied with the distance. I am sure he’s already thinking about the next tournament and how to improve further,” the Paralympic star shared in an exclusive conversation with RevSportz, which clearly reflects his coach’s dedication and high expectations regarding him.
Next, mention must be made of Indian women’s cricket team bowling coach, Aavishkar Salvi. As observed by my colleagues, Trisha Ghosal and Snehasis Mukherjee, he had a massive contribution behind the ODI World Cup win in 2025, often stepping in himself to audition net bowlers for practice sessions. He made sure the team always had the best set of bowlers to train with. Additionally, he spent considerable time with bowlers in the team who were not even necessarily regular members in the playing XI, backing them, providing the confidence that they need and making them train every day. It was the quiet commitment behind the scenes that ensured the team’s overall success.
Working in cricket as a sports manager/ support staff member is also definitely taxing. No specific working hours, constantly travelling, staying away from friends and family are certain challenges that are part and parcel of the job. While it is definitely emotionally fulfilling and no one ever complaints, from day to night, their job truly never ends. After the match is over, and the players leave for the hotel, to relax and cool off after a busy day at work, these individuals stay back at the stadium, working things out, sorting logistics, reviewing details and preparing for what lies ahead. The schedule gets busier during any major ICC tournament and even after it ends with a major victory, they are working tirelessly, ensuring the smooth flow of any meet and greet, managing travel plans, taking note of recovery schedule, and juggling media commitments.
RevSportz spoke to the social media coordinator of Assam Cricket Association, Smrity Jaiswal, who said: “During major international tournaments, be it IPL, women’s World Cups or T20Is and Test matches, the responsibility starts almost a month in advance. The work moves seamlessly, from desk to field, coordinating media accreditation for state, national and international journalists, managing them during tournaments, handling social media coverage, capturing moments through photos and videos and organising pre and post-match conferences.” She added that at times, there are days when it all feels extremely heavy, but when everything comes together and the tournament runs smoothly, the sense of fulfilment makes every long hour worthwhile.
This article focuses on the unsung heroes behind the scenes, who toil hard every single day and build the foundation upon which every celebrated moment in sport is shaped. As mentioned by Smrity: “We may not stand in front of the camera, but being part of the unseen framework that keeps the game alive is a feeling that words can barely capture.”
