Mumbai Indians broke Gujarat Giants’ winning spree in WPL 2026 with a thrilling seven-wicket win at the DY Patil Stadium on Tuesday night. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur led from the front, with Nicola Carey and Amanjot Kaur providing perfect support. Gujarat Giants, batting first, posted 192/5, but MI chased the target down with four balls to spare.
Harmanpreet finally won a toss, and it was no surprise when she chose to field first. After last game’s heroics, Sophie Devine was dismissed early by Shabnim Ismail for just eight, with G Kamalini taking a sharp catch to her right. Kanika Ahuja was promoted up the order in the absence of the injured Anushka Sharma, and she justified the management’s faith with a breezy 35 off 18 balls. Gujarat Giants cruised to 64/1 in 6.2 overs, with Beth Mooney playing second fiddle to Kanika.
That momentum was checked when Amelia Kerr struck to remove Mooney. Unlike the first two games, Ashleigh Gardner did not look settled and was dismissed for 20, trapped lbw by Nicola Carey as she shuffled across the stumps. Soon after, Hayley Matthews, who came in for Nat Sciver-Brunt in the XI, removed Kanika to leave GG at 97/3 in 9.2 overs.
The responsibility then fell on Ayushi Soni and Georgia Wareham to rebuild. Ayushi struggled for fluency, and her 37-run partnership with Wareham off 35 balls slowed the scoring rate considerably. Under pressure, Ayushi became the first batter to be retired out in WPL history, with Bharti Fulmali walking in for the final four overs.
The move paid rich dividends. Fulmali’s late assault, combined with Wareham’s composure, transformed the innings. The pair added 56 runs in the last four overs, lifting Gujarat Giants to a formidable 192/5. Fulmali remained unbeaten on 36 off 15 balls, while Wareham finished on 43 not out from 33 deliveries.
Mumbai Indians conceded 39 runs in the final two overs, with Harmanpreet having already used Shabnim Ismail’s three overs upfront and bowling her out by the 15th. With Sciver-Brunt unavailable, Harmanpreet turned to Amanjot, Carey and Matthews, with Amanjot conceding 23 runs in her final over.
In reply, Mumbai Indians finally had Matthews back at the top alongside Kamalini. A neat piece of glove work fromMooney sent the young Kamalini back off Renuka Singh Thakur’s bowling, but Matthews lit up the stadium with three fours and a six. After her dismissal, Amanjot and Harmanpreet took control, adding 72 off 44 balls, with Amanjot the aggressor in her 38 off 21.
When Amanjot fell in the 13th over, MI still needed 84 off 47 balls. Harmanpreet anchored the chase with a fine balance of caution and aggression and found an ideal partner in Carey, who looked in sublime touch from the outset.
Carey struck timely boundaries, and once Harmanpreet crossed fifty, she shifted gears. The pair ran hard between the wickets, exploiting Fulmali’s slower arm, while Gujarat Giants’ fielding further hurt their cause as Harmanpreet was dropped three times.
Mumbai Indians now have two wins from three matches and sit on four points, level with Gujarat Giants, who have also played three games. MI next face UP Warriorz on January 15, while GG take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru on January 16.
