Pat Cummins Claims Cameron Green’s Catch Was Fair

Pat Cummins, who led Australia to the World Test Championship at The Oval on Sunday, had no doubts about the controversial catch that Cameron Green took to dismiss Shubman Gill on the fourth evening. Cummins said he had complete faith in the umpires’ ability to make the right decisions, even as Rohit Sharma, his Indian counterpart, lamented the lack of more technology.

Gill, who was on 18, edged a delivery from Scott Boland into the hands Green. Despite certain camera angles suggesting that the ball touched the ground after Green caught it, Richard Kettleborough, the third umpire, upheld the decision and Gill was declared out.

“I thought it was a fair catch,” said Cummins at the post-match press conference. (Cameron) Green’s was an absolute screamer, and obviously we’re just players. We’re out on the field, so we leave it in the umpire’s hands. Personally, he’s probably the best umpire in the world, he knows the rule books, he’s seen every angle. I’d probably back his decision more than emotional, passionate fans that are looking on a big screen from 100 meters away.”
