Lungi Ngidi (PC: X)

South Africa fast bowler Lungi Ngidi produced a brilliant spell as he etched his name into SA20 history with a sensational hat-trick on January 7. His effort helped Pretoria Capitals seal their second win of the season, defeating Durban’s Super Giants by 15 runs in Durban.

Ngidi became the first player ever to take a hat-trick in the SA20. He achieved the milestone in the 18th over when the Super Giants needed 44 runs from the final three overs. Ngidi delivered three perfect balls in succession to dismiss David Wiese (8), Sunil Narine, and Gerald Coetzee. He finished with figures of 3/39 from four overs at an economy rate of 9.75.

Ngidi’s form will also be crucial for the Indian Premier League, as he was acquired by Delhi Capitals at a base price of ₹2 crore to strengthen their pace attack at the IPL 2026 mini-auction in Abu Dhabi. In the IPL 2025, he was a part of the title-winning squad of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Earlier, Pretoria Capitals posted a strong total of 201/4, led by Shai Hope, who registered the highest individual score in the history of the SA20. Hope smashed unbeaten 118 runs off 69 balls, with his innings including nine fours and nine sixes at a strike rate of 171.01.

For the Super Giants, Kwena Maphaka, David Wiese, and Gerald Coetzee picked up one wicket each.

In reply, despite a fighting 97 from Jos Buttler, the Super Giants fell short by 15 runs. Apart from Ngidi, Gideon Peters also impressed for the Capitals, picking up three crucial wickets while conceding just 35 runs at an economy rate of 8.75.
