“Where is Prasidh Krishna going wrong? What exactly is his role?” With the lanky fast bowler once more turning out to be expensive in the third India-South Africa game in Vizag, his position has again come under scrutiny. Yes, he picked up a couple of wickets in his second spell, but the critics will point to his inability to keep the runs down.
For starters, the pacer has enough tools in his weaponry. After all, Prasidh can bowl the hard length and consistently clocks over 140 kph. However, to succeed at the highest level, a cricketer needs to possess more than just raw materials.
So, what exactly is he doing wrong then? In modern-day limited overs cricket, the bowler has to bowl defensively. In white-ball cricket, the fields are spread, and you don’t expect the pitches to assist the bowlers much. In such circumstances, from a pace bowler’s perspective, tools such as into-the-pitch slower ones would help. Unfortunately, Prasidh seems to be mostly on an all-out attack mode.
Just consider the second over that he bowled to Quinton de Kock in Vizag. Prasidh often tried to hit a fuller length and bowled with a burst of pace. He didn’t look to change his pace. Moreover, the fuller one isn’t really his strength, as at that length, he doesn’t get any real movement. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that de Kock took him to the cleaners as the boisterous crowd was silenced.
The detractors also point to lack of mental strength when put under pressure. Whatever is the case, the Indian think-tank would be frustrated with Prasidh’s returns as they have backed him over the last few years. His Test and ODI records narrate a story — a genuine wicket-taker but the bowler isn’t being able to string together enough dots.
