Top-order batter Aaron George is nursing a tennis elbow injury and remains doubtful for the remainder of the ongoing ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup. Captain Ayush Mhatre provided an update on the 19-year-old after he missed out on selection for the tournament opener against the USA.

Eyebrows were raised when the playing XI was announced, with Aaron not included.

“He (Aaron) is nursing a tennis elbow injury, which is why we rested him for this game,” Mhatre said in response to RevSportz’s query.

India will play Bangladesh on January 17. With very little turnaround time, Aaron is all but ruled out of that game.

When asked about the extent of Aaron’s injury, Mhatre said: “The medical team will assess him today, and by today or tomorrow there should be an update on him.”

In the absence of Aaron, Vedant Trivedi batted at number three and could manage only 2 off 10 deliveries.

Aaron is one of India’s most in-form batters, having scored four fifties and one hundred in his last ten innings. In Youth ODIs, only Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has scored more runs than the right-handed batter.

At the Queens Sports Club, India won their first game against the USA. Aaron’s absence was not felt as India secured a six-wicket victory, with Abhigyan Kundu top-scoring with 42 after Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre failed with the bat.

Chasing 97, India were reduced to 25/3 by the USA bowlers on a wicket that assisted both pacers and spinners.

“Conditions were tough. We are not used to playing in this weather. The wicket was dicey. From one end there was extra bounce, and from the other there was low bounce, but we played well according to the conditions,” Mhatre said.

When asked about the brand of cricket his team would play, Mhatre said:

“There’s no set brand of cricket that we have adopted as a team. In every game, we will assess the conditions and play according to the situation.”
