Kane Williamson will miss the white-ball tour of India due to prior SA20 commitments, as New Zealand announced their squads for the three-match ODI and five-match T20I series.
Uncapped Jayden Lennox has earned his maiden international call-up. Speaking about the selection, head coach Rob Walter said the left-arm spinner has the potential to be a consistent performer at international level. With Mitchell Santner available only for the five-match T20I series, Lennox has been included as the sole left-arm spin-bowling option.
“Jayden has been an identified player of interest for some time and has some good New Zealand A experience under his belt. He has consistently been one of the top performers in domestic white-ball cricket for a number of seasons,” Walter said in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket.
The ODI squad, which will be led by Michael Bracewell, lacks experience. With the focus firmly on the T20 World Cup, many of the first-choice players have been selected to feature only in the T20I leg of the tour.
Nathan Smith (side), Blair Tickner (shoulder) and Mark Chapman (ankle) were not considered for selection for the ODI series as they continue their recovery. While Smith and Tickner will miss the entire tour, Chapman is expected to take part in the T20I leg.
New Zealand’s tour will get underway with the ODI series from January 11, ahead of the T20I series that begins on January 21.
