The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 matches scheduled on January 14 and 15 could be played behind closed doors due to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in Mumbai.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the matches will go ahead as planned, but the inclusion of spectators remains uncertain because of security concerns raised by the Mumbai Police.
Explaining the reason behind the uncertainty to IANS, Saikia said, “The thing is that there is a local (municipal) election in Mumbai on 15th. So we are contemplating that we’ll go ahead with the matches. Whether there will be crowd in the stands or not, we are yet to finalise or take a decision. The matches will go on, but whether we’ll allow crowd or not is the question because there is some information from the Mumbai police that they won’t be able to provide the security for matches on those days. So we’ll take a decision in a day or two and we’lllet you know.”
Saikia further clarified that the match on January 16 is not under concern. He said, “It does not include 16th because the election is on 15th and 14th is the day before elections. So16th I think it will be the counting day and so we are not taking it into account. For 14th and 15th whether we will allow the crowd to come to the stadium or not – that decision we have to take and as of now, we are deliberating on it.”
Currently, tickets are not yet available for these dates. On January 14, Delhi Capitals will face UP Warriorz. On January 15, Mumbai Indians will lock horns with UP Warriorz, and on January 16, Gujarat Giants will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
