Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta has raised concerns about the current form of India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav. The Men in Blue are in the final phase of preparation for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Even though India began the South Africa series with a dominant 101-run win, Dasgupta feels the team cannot ignore their captain’s struggle for runs.
“The win last night showed how good India are, especially when it is not a watch-the-ball, hit-the-ball pitch (Cuttack was a sticky surface). It says a lot about their depth,” Deep told PTI.
The forme pointed out that both Suryakumar and his deputy, Shubman Gill, need to return to form before the World Cup.
“I would not say it is a concern, but ideally you would want to see them score runs. Once you start thinking about runs, the chances are you won’t bat freely. With Surya, it is not just one series; we have not seen the best of him since he took over the captaincy last year,” he said.
Suryakumar scored his last half-century against Bangladesh in Hyderabad on 12 October 2024. In his last 19 innings, the right-hander has crossed 30 runs only twice, which shows he is really struggling to rediscover his form. This year, his average has been below 25 and his strike rate below 130, with no scores of fifty or more.
