New Zealand fast bowler Blair Tickner suffered a suspected dislocation of his left shoulder and was taken off the field on a stretcher on the opening day of the second Test against the West Indies.
The 32-year-old cricketer was stretchered off on his home ground in Wellington and taken to hospital, which puts his participation in the remainder of the Test in serious doubt.
In the 63rd over of the first innings, Tickner dived at full stretch to stop a boundary at fine leg and went down clutching his shoulder.
The tall pacer couldn’t stand up and remained lying on the ground. New Zealand’s medical personnel and venue staff immediately came to assist him in leaving the field. He received an appreciative acknowledgement from the home crowd.
“He [Tickner] left the field with a left shoulder injury and was transported to hospital shortly afterwards,” NZC said in a release. “Once the medical team and local doctors have done their work with him, an update will be provided.”
Before getting injured, Tickner had already done the damage with the ball. In the absence of Matt Henry, he led the bowling attack and recorded figures of 4/32 off his 16 overs, including three maidens. Largely due to his efforts, the West Indies were dismissed for 205 late in the day.
New Zealand brought him into the playing XI after Henry and Nathan Smith were ruled out of the series due to injury concerns. His injury adds to an already lengthy list of sidelined bowlers, which includes Mitchell Santner, Will O’Rourke, Ben Sears, and Matt Fisher.
After bowling out the West Indies early, Devon Conway and Tom Latham played out the remainder of the day and took the team to 24/0.
