Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has been named captain of the Hyderabad team for the remainder of the Ranji Trophy season. Top-order batter G Rahul Singh, who led the team in the first seven matches of the season, has been appointed his deputy.

The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) took the decision after the team’s poor performance in the first round of matches. One win in five games, including three draws, has left the team on the brink of elimination. From this position, they are unlikely to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Siraj is yet to play a match for Hyderabad in this Ranji Trophy season. The seasoned pacer returned to action in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this season, picking up seven wickets in four matches. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he took three wickets in three games. However, Hyderabad failed to qualify for the knockouts, finishing sixth in Group B with two wins from seven matches.

Siraj’s last appearance in the Ranji Trophy for Hyderabad was in January 2025 against Vidarbha, after he was dropped from the Champions Trophy squad.

Currently, Siraj is with the Indian team, playing the three-match ODI series against New Zealand. So far, he has taken two wickets in the two matches. Once the series concludes, Siraj will return home, as Hyderabad are set to play their remaining two fixtures on home turf.

Placed in Group D, Hyderabad will face Mumbai and Chhattisgarh in their final two fixtures of the season on 22 and 29 January respectively.
