Cameron Green PC:IPL/BCCI

Former cricketer-turned-commentator Irfan Pathan has tipped Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to bid for Australian all-rounder Cameron Green. Pathan believes KKR will look for a like-for-like replacement for Andre Russell, who announced his IPL retirement on November 30.

Speaking about KKR’s strategy, Pathan said Green would fit perfectly into the requirements of their squad. “Cameron Green is a top-quality all-rounder, and with KKR entering the auction with a sizeable purse, they will surely target him,” he said while speaking on the TATA IPL Auction Most Wanted show. “With Andre Russell retired, Green offers a like-for-like replacement, someone who can contribute with both bat and ball, although he will probably bat a bit higher up the order. I expect CSK to show interest too.”

Green has previously represented Mumbai Indians in 2023 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024. The Western Australian missed IPL 2025 as he was recovering from back surgery. In 29 IPL matches, Green has scored 707 runs at an average of 41.58 and a strike rate of 153.69. He has also taken 16 wickets at an economy rate of 9.07.

Pathan also underlined the value of New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, especially for teams that play on slow, spin-friendly pitches.

“Daryl Mitchell is a quality overseas batter who plays spin exceptionally well, which is exactly why Chennai Super Kings invested heavily in him earlier, paying around INR 14 crore,” he added. “His ability to handle spin on tricky surfaces like Chennai’s makes him a strong asset. With solid experience in both international and league cricket, he brings the temperament and skill teams look for in a proven overseas performer.”

The IPL 2026 mini auction is set to take place in Abu Dhabi on December 16, with KKR entering the auction with the largest purse of INR 64.30 crore.
