Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes Virat Kohli can surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s world record of 100 international centuries. Recently, Kohli smashed back-to-back centuries against South Africa in the first two ODIs and remained unbeaten on 65 runs in the series decider. Those two hundreds took his overall tally to 83.

When asked if Kohli can break Tendulkar’s record, Gavaskar said: “Why not? If he plays for three more years, he needs 17 more centuries. The way he is batting — in a three-match series he has scored two tons. So, going forward into the New Zealand series in January, if he scores two centuries, that would take him to 85 (or 86). The most important thing is that he is enjoying his batting. With the batting he did today, it never felt that the match was going out of his hands,” he said in an interview with Star Sports.

The former India opener further said: “We saw Virat’s T20 avatar in the ODI today. He did not play a single poor shot. There was no inside or outside edge. He was in terrific form. About 40 days remain before the next ODI series against New Zealand. If the series were right now, he would have scored two or three centuries.”

Against South Africa, Kohli scored 302 runs in three innings at an average of 151.00. He needs 16 centuries to break Tendulkar’s record. Tendulkar has 49 ODI and 51 Test centuries to his name.

Kohli will be seen in action in the blue jersey when India take on New Zealand ithe first ODI, which will be played on 11 January.
