Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said that Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket was a well-thought-out decision.
Since the last few days, there were many reports that Virat Kohli was requested to come out of his retirement from Test cricket. But Kohli himself ended all those talks by confirming that he will only continue to play ODIs after his brilliant knock of 135 against South Africa that helped India win the first ODI of the three-match series in Ranchi.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that these kinds of big decisions are not taken instinctively.
“What’s there to think about? Whatever decision we take, it is well thought out. No one decides about retirement overnight. I am fairly certain that if Virat retired from Tests, he was quite clear that he wanted to do so. Nobody makes instinctive decisions. We have all crossed that road.”
There were glimpses of prime Kohli when the 37-year-old batter completed his 52nd ton in ODI cricket and became the first male player to achieve that. However, Ashwin believes that Test cricket is a totally different game.
“Sure, as audience and fans, we all want to see Virat Kohli. It’s there, and the way he batted yesterday, fans are going to think Virat Kohli is in his prime and why we are not able to see him. Test cricket is a different kettle of fish, and he has made his decision about that,” he said.
