Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has criticised Harry Brook’s approach during the ongoing Ashes 2025/26 series, suggesting the right-hander is not making the most of his immense talent.
Speaking to Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review, Ponting said some of Brook’s dismissals have been disappointing.
“Look, I love Harry Brook. He’s one of the best players in the world to watch. But with some of his dismissals, he’s almost selling himself a bit short on how good he is. He doesn’t need to do some of the stuff that he’s doing. He’s had a chance to sit back and watch Joe Root go about his cricket for the last 15 years. And this is no knock on Joe Root — Harry Brook’s got every bit as much talent as Joe Root has.”
There has been a lot of criticism of Brook for the manner of his dismissals in the ongoing Ashes series. In the second innings of the third Test, he tried to reverse-sweep Nathan Lyon and was bowled. The right-handed batter has scored 173 runs from three matches at an average of 28.83, which includes only one fifty.
“They’ll always say, ‘that’s the way that we play and we encourage them to play their natural games’. But you can’t do that in Australia and you can’t do it against Australia. If you give them an inch, they’ll take a mile. And we’ve seen that right the way through the series,” Ponting added.
