Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was full of praise for India after their eight-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third T20I of the five-match series in Guwahati.
Speaking on JioHotstar as quoted in NDTV Sports, Gavaskar termed India a champion side.
“Look at everything, not just the batting. Their bowling, their catching, their outfielding – they were a champion side. What do we do against this side? How do we stop this side? This is a side to beat. This is a side that will take some beating.”
India completely outplayed the Kiwis in the third match. The ‘Men in Blue’ won the toss and elected to bowl first. Courtesy of Jasprit Bumrah’s figures of 3/17 at an economy rate of 4.25 and Ravi Bishnoi’s 2/18, India restricted New Zealand to 153/9 in their 20 overs.
In reply, India lost Sanju Samson early, and Ishan Kishan could not capitalise on his start. However, from there, Abhishek Sharma and captain Suryakumar Yadav took the aggressive route and finished the match with 10 overs to spare. Abhishek missed Yuvraj Singh’s record of the fastest 12-ball fifty, as the young left-hander remained unbeaten on 68 off 20 balls, while Suryakumar was not out on 57 off 26 balls.
Speaking about Abhishek’s knock, Gavaskar said: “Getting to a fifty that quickly is very tough. But what Abhishek has been showing over the last many matches is that he’s capable of doing that. One time he’s done it in 14 deliveries, another time in 16, so he’s getting there.”
